No indiscrimate calling of members of the opposite sex by their first names, for example. So when the hero finally calls the heroine by her first name, it packs a real emotional punch.

It's also witty in a very Austen-like way; Penelope Watson has some splendid one-liners. And the formidable Lady Osborne is a terrific character.Elizabeth Hawksleyhttp://www.elizabethhawksley.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18955239.post-4645346068327219292011-01-26T16:23:11.091+00:002011-01-26T16:23:11.091+00:00I've not come across this book and would love ...I've not come across this book and would love to read it on your recommendation, Elizabeth!Jane Odiwehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10712868693656060688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18955239.post-40641898920590492502011-01-26T08:45:46.786+00:002011-01-26T08:45:46.786+00:00I haven't read this book, Elizabeth, but I mus...I haven't read this book, Elizabeth, but I must look out for it. Perhaps the library will have it. I know that Sourcebooks publish the Joan Aiken continuation of The Watsons http://www.amazon.com/Watsons-Emma-Watson-Unfinished-Completed/dp/1402212291/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t

and I suppose that's why they don't publish the Coates version as well.

The Watsons has such a promising beginning that it makes Austen's early death even more of a tragedy. I'm sure she would have written many more novels if her life hadn't been cut short.Amanda Grangehttp://www.amandagrange.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18955239.post-37043927758234132092011-01-25T12:27:16.437+00:002011-01-25T12:27:16.437+00:00I agree. It's very readable and there's plenty going on.Elizabeth Hawksleyhttp://www.elizabethhawksley.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18955239.post-15359491967521104002011-01-25T09:04:44.560+00:002011-01-25T09:04:44.560+00:00I agree that it's a great pity this hasn't...I agree that it's a great pity this hasn't been reprinted, Elizabeth. I read it a long time ago from the library and would love to get my hands on the book again. I also wonder whether The Watsons in one or other of the finished forms has ever been considered for a TV adaptation? Given the interest in Jane Austen films and TV versions it seems odd that, as far as I know, no one has ever televised it. And what about Lady Susan - surely that would make a great TV film?Nicola Cornickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12916076219284821820noreply@blogger.com
