My thoughts were that as she was the middle child she felt neglected and did most of the moralizing to get attention from her parents who tended to ignore her unless she made a quip from her bible or Fordyce Sermon's. I just hope that she finds someone to see though the facade she as built around herself.

LynneLynnehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11286757698670758669noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18955239.post-77583637445008491842009-04-30T10:02:00.000+01:002009-04-30T10:02:00.000+01:00I agree with Mandy that Mary isn't to be pitied. I never felt any sympathy for Mary; always she was a prosy and smug young woman and never saw how she could improve unless someone shook her out of herself. But I really liked this. Hopefully Mr. Shackleton will help her expand her mind a bit.Lorihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08506026496063245730noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18955239.post-40291288772214840622009-04-24T10:10:00.000+01:002009-04-24T10:10:00.000+01:00She doesn't mention him in P&P, Jan, but w...She doesn't mention him in P&P, Jan, but when Jane Austen's family asked her what became of Mary she said that Mary went on to marry one of her uncle's clerks, so I thought it would be fun to include him here!Amandahttp://www.amandagrange.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18955239.post-80628886548717005812009-04-24T08:57:00.000+01:002009-04-24T08:57:00.000+01:00Very Mary and amusing.

Austen also neglected her, as she seems to be very slight and insubstantial, almost a cypher meant only for humour. A shame, Mary has so much potential. Nor did the recent ugh Colleen McCullough sequel do her any justice.Michellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15612437244688388815noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18955239.post-48540836712134212932009-04-24T07:29:00.000+01:002009-04-24T07:29:00.000+01:00Loved this, Amanda!
