Did anyone else catch the reference to cricket and baseball which occurred near the beginning of the excellent tv adaptation of Northanger Abbey?
Baseball?
I can't pretend to be an expert on the recreational pursuits of the age but it didn't quite ring true to me. Was it a reference to an early form of rounders perhaps, did the British really adopt baseball before the Americans, or was it merely a slip of the script-writer's pen? Does anyone know?

From Northanger Abbey-'...that Catherine, who had by nature nothing heroic about her, should prefer cricket, base ball, riding on horseback...' I suspect Jane Austen played base ball and cricket with her brothers-the game obviously didn't catch on here in quite the same way as in the States, but I'm sure must have been similar to rounders.
I noticed this as well and wondered. Rounders would probably have been played but I somehow think it was a slip up to use that name, which is an American term for a similar game to rounders. It didn't spoil things for me, but the BBC wouldn't have made that mistake
